ATTERBERG LIMIT TESTS FOR QUANTITATIVE EARTHWORK CONTROL

METHODS OF USING INDEX PROPERTY TESTS FOR THE QUANTITATIVE CONTROL OF EARTHWORKS ARE DESCRIBED. RELATIONSHIPS WERE FOUND BETWEEN THE PROCTOR MAXIMUM DRY DENSITY AND THE LIQUID LIMIT OF SOILS-AND ALSO THE PLASTIC INDEX AT ANY ONE LIQUID LIMIT. THE MORE COMMON RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE PROCTOR OPTIMUM WATER CONTENT AND THE PLASTIC LIMIT WAS ALSO FOUND TO EXIST. IT IS SUGGESTED THAT THESE RELATIONSHIPS DURING THE SITE INVESTIGATION STAGE OF A CONTRACT SHOULD BE USED FOR DESIGN PURPOSES AND FOR MORE EFFICIENT AND ECONOMIC CONTROL OF COMPACTION IN THE FIELD. DATA GIVEN WAS OBTAINED FROM TESTS ON CERTAIN RESIDUAL SOILS IN N. W. MALAYA. THE EFFECT OF PRETREATMENT ON THESE SOILS IS BRIEFLY MENTIONED. /RRL/
