THE PHYSICAL BEHAVIOR IS DESCRIBED OF GRANULAR MATERIAL UNDER COMPRESSION. IT IS SUGGESTED THAT THE COMPRESSION OF FILL MATERIAL IS DUE TO CRUSHING OF AGGREGATES AND CHANGES IN THE STRUCTURE OF THE MASS. DENSE COMPACTED FILL MATERIAL IS LESS COMPRESSIBLE THAN LOOSE FILL AND BROAD-GRADED MATERIAL IS LESS COMPRESSIBLE THAN NARROW-GRADED MATERIAL. AGGREGATES HAVING AN ANGULAR SHAPE ARE LESS COMPRESSIBLE THAN SHAPE-EDGED AGGREGATES AND THOSE OF HIGH COMPRESSION STRENGTH ARE LESS COMPRESSIBLE THAN THOSE OF LOWER STRENGTH. IN AREAS WHERE ROCK IS PARTLY EXPOSED AND PARTLY IN DEPRESSION COVERED BY SOIL, PRACTICAL GUIDANCE FOR CONSTRUCTION WORK IS GIVEN AND ILLUSTRATED. THE RECOMMENDED THICKNESS OF LAYERS AND NUMBER OF PASSES FOR FILLS OF BLASTED ROCK AND GRAVEL ARE LISTED FOR A NUMBER OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF COMPACTION EQUIPMENT. A FORMULA FOR CALCULATING BEARING CAPACITY IS PRESENTED BUT IT SHOULD BE BORNE IN MIND THAT IN MOST CASES IT IS THE LIMITATION ON ALLOWABLE SETTLEMENTS THAT WILL BE DECISIVE FOR DESIGN OF THE FOUNDATION. A FORMULA IS GIVEN FOR CALCULATION OF THE SETTLEMENT OF FOUNDATIONS ON COMPACTED ROCK AND GRAVELLY MATERIAL, AND THE COMPRESSIBILITY OF FILL MATERIAL IS OBTAINABLE. /RRL/A/
