The physical and mechanical properties of titanium and its principal alloys are briefly described and the more recently determined corrosion behavior under conditions of impingement and abrasion, heat transfer, contact with other metals and in the presence of static and cyclic stress, is summarized. Shipboard applications are principally for both tubular and plate-type heat exchangers, impeller fans, and for platinized titanium used as anode material in hypochlorite generator cells and in cathodic protection. These applications are described and analysed in respect of their economic advantages in comparison with alternative materials.
