AN EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF THE STABILITY OF SLURRY TRENCHES

THE RESULTS ARE PRESENTED OF A NUMBER OF LABORATORY TESTS ON SMALL SCALE TRENCHES SUPPORTED BY CLAY SUSPENSIONS IN COHESIONLESS SOIL. THE RESULTS HAVE BEEN ANALYZED USING THE MEASURED SLIP SURFACES AND COMPARED WITH THE RESULTS OBTAINED FROM COULOMB'S WEDGE THEORY. IT WAS FOUND THAT THE STABILITY OF THE SYSTEM DEPENDED ON THE HYDROSTATIC PRESSURE OF THE SLURRY, THE SHEARING RESISTANCE OF THE SLURRY- SATURATED SAND AND THE PASSIVE RESISTANCE OF THE CLAY SUSPENSION. A SIMPLIFIED THEORY HAS BEEN PROPOSED TO CALCULATE THE SHEARING RESISTANCE OF THE ZONE OF SOIL SATURATED WITH SLURRY. GRAPHS OF THE FACTOR OF SAFETY AGAINST SURFACE SETTLEMENT HAVE ALSO BEEN PLOTTED AND IT WAS FOUND THAT RELATIVELY SMALL SETTLEMENTS OCCURRED UNTIL THE FACTOR OF SAFETY FELL BELOW 1.1. COMPARISON BETWEEN THE MODEL RESULTS AND FULL SIZE TRENCHES INDICATES THAT THE SAME STABILIZING MECHANISMS OPERATE BUT THEIR RELATIVE MAGNITUDES ARE ALTERED. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT THE STABILITY OF FULL SCALE TRENCHES SUPPORTED BY A CLAY SUSPENSION IN COHESIONLESS SOILS DEPENDS DOMINANTLY ON THE HYDROSTATIC PRESSURE OF THE SLURRY AND THE SHEARING RESISTANCE OF THE ZONE OF SOIL SATURATED WITH SLURRY. THE STABILIZING EFFECT OF THE PASSIVE RESISTANCE OF THE SLURRY IS SMALL AND IN MOST PRACTICAL TRENCHES NEGLIGIBLE. /RRL/A/
