THE VANE SHEAR TEST AND ITS USE FOR SHEAR STRENGTH MEASUREMENT OF COHESIVE SOILS

THIS ARTICLE REVIEWS THE PRINCIPLES OF AND EXISTING PROCEDURES USED FOR VANE TESTS. A COMPARISON IS MADE BETWEEN IN-SITU AND LABORATORY VANE TESTS, AND BETWEEN IN-SITU AND LABORATORY VANE TESTS AND SINGLE OR TRIAXIAL COMPRESSION TESTS. TEST RESULTS ARE NOT ALWAYS IN AGREEMENT, AND THE FACTORS INFLUENCING THE MEASUREMENTS ARE STUDIED: REMOULDING OF THE SOIL, GEOMETRY OF THE APPARATUS, RATE OF DEFORMATION (0.1 SECOND IS RECOMMENDED RATE), MODE OF FAILURE DURING TESTS, HETEROGENEITY AND ANISOTROPY OF THE SOIL, AND SOILS WITH SHORT-TERM ANGLE OF FRICTION. /LCPC/RRL/
