THE COMPACTION OF SOIL USED AS A NATURAL FOUNDATION /IN RUSSIAN/

THE DENSITY REQUIREMENTS FOR SUBGRADES ARE DISCUSSED. DENSITY MUST EQUAL A MINIMUM OF 98 PERCENT OF THE MAXIMUM DENSITY. THIS RULE APPLIES WHETHER THE ROAD IS IN A CUTTING OR AN EMBANKMENT, OR AT NORMAL GROUND LEVEL AND IN EACH CASE THE NATURAL SOIL MUST BE COMPACTED. THE DIFFICULTY CONSISTS IN OVERCOMING THE STRUCTURAL BONDS OF THE NATURAL SOIL, AND COMPACTING A SUFFICIENT THICKNESS OF SOIL. SEVERAL COMPACTORS WERE TESTED, AND THE 32-TON PNEUMATIC-TIRED ROLLER PROVED THE MOST EFFECTIVE. HEAVY PNEUMATIC-TIRED ROLLERS ENABLE THE NATURAL SOIL TO BE COMPACTED TO A DEPTH OF 30 TO 40 CM. IF THE SOIL HAS TO BE COMPACTED TO A GREATER DEPTH, TAMPING EQUIPMENT MUST BE USED. /LCPC/RRL/
