This article describes studies conducted by Bureau Veritas on the subject of liquid motions in partially filled tanks. A test rig for these studies was designed and commissioned, and a series of liquid motion experiments have been conducted. The test rig is described, and a description is also given of the testing program, which includes the observation of the liquid motions, a pressure study, and the effect of these phenomena on the structural calculations for the tank. These studies are expected to help determine pressure loadings on the tank bulkheads and give knowledge of forces that are transmitted to the supporting structure. It is hoped that this information will improve the structural design approach to self supporting cargo tanks on LNG ships.
