STUDY OF THE REPRODUCIBILITY OF DENSITY AND PLATE DEFLECTION MEASUREMENTS /FRENCH/

THE POSSIBILITY OF REPRODUCING THE SAME COMPACTING OPERATION ON A 0/18 CRUSHED GRAVEL BASE COURSE WAS STUDIED IN A SERIES OF IDENTICAL TESTS. THE EVALUATION OF REPRODUCIBILITY WAS BASED ON THE RESULTS OBTAINED FOR DRY DENSITY, COMPACTION INDICES AND ELASTIC DEFLECTIONS. IN SPITE OF A STRICT CONTROL ON MOISTURE CONTENT, GRAMULOMETRY, LAYER THICKNESS, RATE OF COMPACTION AND RIGIDITY OF THE FOUNDATION SOIL, IT WAS PROVED THAT DRY DENSITIES AND COMPACTION INDICES WERE FOUND TO BE NOT STATISTICALLY REPRODUCIBLE. THE ERROR IS CONSIDERABLY GREATER THAN COULD BE EXPECTED FROM THE INTERVAL VARIANCE OF EACH OPERATION. THE FOLLOWING CONCLUSIONS ARE REACHED: (1) FOR A SPECIFIC COMPACTION MACHINE, A CHARACTERISTIC VARIANCE CAN BE VALID FOR ALL MACHINES, AND (2) IF THIS VARIANCE IS KNOWN, COMPARISON CAN BE MADE BETWEEN COMPACTION MACHINES. /LCPC/RRL/AUTHOR/
