THE COMPACTION OF GRAVEL-CEMENT SPECIMANS, COMPARISON OF LABORATORY RESULTS OBTAINED WITH AN ELECTRIC HAMMER AND A MODIFIED PROCTOR HAMMER (IN FRENCH)

RESULTS ARE REPORTED OF MAKING CYLINDRICAL SAMPLES OF GRAVELCEMENT (DIAMETER 15 CM., RAKE 1), COMPACTED EITHER WITH A MODIFIED PROCTOR HAMMER, OR WITH AN ELECTRIC HAMMER WORKING AT A FREQUENCY OF 30 CYCLES. A COMPARISON IS MADE OF THE EFFECTS PRODUCED BY THESE TWO ITEMS OF EQUIPMENT ON THE GRANULOMETRY OF THE MATERIAL, THE DISTRIBUTION OF DENSITY ALONG THE SAMPLES (MEASUREMENTS MADE ON A GAMMAGRAPHIC BENCH), THE DISPERSIONS OF AVERAGE DENSITIES, AND ULTIMATE COMPRESSIVE STRENGTHS. IT IS SHOWN THAT IT IS POSSIBLE TO CONSTRUCT, ACCURATELY AND AT LOW COST, COMPACTING CURVES ANALOGOUS TO PROCTOR CURVES, OBTAINED WITH AN ELECTRIC HAMMER. THE AUTHORS CONCLUDE THAT AN ELECTRIC HAMMER IS MORE ADVANTAGEOUS THAN A PROCTOR HAMMER, AND THAT IT IS NECESSARY TO STUDY COMPACTING BY VIBRO-COMPRESSION. /LCPC/RRL/A/
