SALM IS GULF SUPERPORT CANDIDATE

Resistance to hurricane action will be a major criterion in determining the type of mooring to be used with superports proposed for the Texas and Louisiana Gulf of Mexico. The Single Anchor Leg Mooring system has an inherent characteristic of being able to withstand the forces produced by hurricanes. A description is given of this mooring system, with the various elements described. Reference is made to two existing ports that make use of this system, one at Marsa el Brega in the Mediterranean Sea, and the other in the East China Sea at Okinawa. Differences in the type of function of the buoys at these ports are also described.
