SOIL-BITUMINOUS ROADS

RECOMMENDED PRACTICES ARE PRESENTED FOR BITUMINOUS SOIL STABILIZATION IN WHICH BITUMINOUS MATERIALS ARE INCORPORATED INTO A SOIL OR A SOIL-AGGREGATE MIXTURE TO PROVIDE BASE COURSES, OCCASIONALLY SURFACE COURSES, WHICH CAN CARRY THE APPLIED TRAFFIC LOADS UNDER ALL NORMAL CONDITIONS OF MOISTURE AND TRAFFIC. THESE PRACTICES ARE DISCUSSED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE FOUR TYPES OF BITUMINOUS SOIL STABILIZATION IN USE: (1) SOIL-BITUMEN WHICH IS A WATERPROOF, COHESIVE SOIL SYSTEM, (2) SAND-BITUMEN, A SYSTEM IN WHICH LOOSE BEACH, DUNE, PIT OR RIVER SAND IS CEMENTED TOGETHER BY BITUMINOUS MATERIAL, (3) WATERPROOFED MECHANICAL STABILIZATION IN WHICH A SOIL MATERIAL POSSESSING GOOD GRADATION OF PARTICLES FROM COARSE TO FINE, AND HAVING HIGH POTENTIAL DENSITY IS WATERPROOFED BY THE UNIFORM DISTRIBUTION OF VERY SMALL AMOUNTS OF BITUMEN, AND (4) OILED EARTH IN WHICH AN EARTH ROAD SURFACE MADE WATER AND ABRASION RESISTANT BY THE APPLICATION OF SLOW OR MEDIUM-CURING ROAD OILS. BITUMEN IS INCORPORATED INTO COHESIVE SOILS AS A WATERPROOFING AGENT TO MAINTAIN A LOW MOISTURE CONTENT AND ADEQUATE BEARING CAPACITY. BITUMINOUS MATERIAL IS INCORPORATED INTO NON-COHESIVE GRANULAR TYPE SOILS TO ACT AS A BINDING OR CEMENTING MEDIUM. FOR WATERPROOFED MECHANICAL STABILIZATION A WELL GRADED MIXTURE OF COARSE AGGREGATE, SAND, AND CLAY BINDER IS REQUIRED. OIL EARTH SURFACES ARE CONSTRUCTED BY APPLYING OIL OR OTHER LOW VISCOSITY BITUMINOUS MATERIALS TO PROPERLY GRADED, COMPACTED AND DRAINED EARTH SURFACES.
