TESTS SHOW MUD-DUST RELIEF ECONOMICAL

AN EXPERIMENTAL ANTI-MUD AND DUST PROJECT WAS INITIATED CONSISTING OF THE STABILIZATION OF THREE DIFFERENT TYPES OF EXISTING BASE MATERIAL BY USE OF A CHEMICAL BASE STABILIZING AGENT: THE APPLICATION OF COURSE SLURRY SEAL MATERIAL AS A LEVELING AGENT AND A FINISH COAT OF FINE SLURRY SEAL MATERIAL. THE EXPERIMENTAL SITE CONSISTED OF THREE SEPARATE TYPES OF ROADWAY: SANDY CLAY GRAVEL WITH REMAINING TRACES OF PREVIOUSLY APPLIED WASH GRAVEL SURFACE COURSE, OLD ASPHALT SURFACE WITH A STABILIZED BASE AREA THAT HAD AGED BEYOND ITS LIFE EXPECTANCY, AND AN OLD GRAVEL ROADWAY SURFACE THAT HAD RECEIVED EXTENSIVE OIL TREATMENT FOR A MINIMUM OF SIX YEARS. THE THREE AREAS WERE SCARIFIED TO A MINIMUM DEPTH OF FOUR INCHES AND A MAXIMUM DEPTH OF SIX INCHES BY GRADERS EQUIPPED WITH SCARIFYING TEETH. AFTER THE APPLICATION OF THE CHEMICAL SOIL STABILIZING AGENT-WATER MIXTURE, THE ENTIRE AREA WAS SATURATED WITH WATER. THE BASE WAS OF QUAGMIRE CONSISTENCY, ALMOST COMPLETELY PLASTIC AND COULD BE COMPARED WITH THE CONSISTENCY OF READY MIX CONCRETE HAVING A SLUMP OF APPROXIMATELY SIX INCHES. THE ENTIRE PROJECT SITE WAS MANIPULATED WITH SHEEPS-FOOT ROLLERS AND WOBBLE WHEEL ROLLERS. THE WOBBLE WHEEL ROLLER AS WELL AS THE STEEL ASPHALT DRUM TYPE ROLLER WERE UTILIZED ON THE SECOND DAY TO PRODUCE A BASE STABILIZED TO A CONDITION SUCH THAT, WHEN TRAVERSED BY WORKING EQUIPMENT, RUTTING WAS NOT VISUALLY APPARENT. ON THE THIRD DAY A FINAL PREPARATION OF THE ROADWAY BASE WAS MADE BY THE USE OF THE ASPHALT STEEL ROLLER IMMEDIATELY PRIOR TO THE APPLICATION OF THE SLURRY SEAL LEVELING COURSE. THIS LEVELING COURSE WAS APPLIED ON AN UNPRIMED STABILIZED BASE APPROXIMATELY 48 HOURS AFTER THE INITIAL APPLICATION OF WATER TO THE SCARIFIED ROADWAY BASE. THE OBJECT OF THIS PROJECT WAS TO DEVELOP A VERY ECONOMICAL MUD AND DUST RELIEF TYPE, HARD SURFACE ROADWAY. THE PROJECT SITE WAS OPENED TO TRAFFIC APPROXIMATELY FOUR HOURS AFTER APPLICATION. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT AN AREA IN WHICH THE CHEMICAL BASE STABILIZER IS REQUIRED TO BREAK DOWN OLD ASPHALT SURFACING AS WELL AS AN EXISTING STABILIZED BASE SHOULD HAVE A STRONGER SOLUTION OR CONCENTRATION OF STABILIZING LIQUID. A SECOND SLURRY SEAL APPLICATION WAS MADE OVER THE ENTIRE PROJECT AREA TEN DAYS LATER. THIS APPLICATION OF SLURRY SEAL MATERIAL GAVE AN APPROXIMATE THICKNESS OF THREE-QUARTERS OF AN INCH, AND WITH THE STABILIZED BASE, IT IS ANTICIPATED THAT THIS ROADWAY COULD HAVE A LIFE EXPECTANCY OF 3 TO 5 YEARS. COST EFFECTIVENESS STUDIES WERE MADE OF THIS TYPE OF CONSTRUCTION.
