USE OF MECHANICALLY STABILISED SOILS FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF BASE AND BASE LAYERS ON ROADS-BULGARIA

IN BULGARIA, THERE ARE MANY QUARRIES WITH STONES OF GOOD QUALITY. GENERALLY, IN BULGARIA, THE DISTANCE FOR THE TRANSPORT OF CRUSHED STONE FOR ROADS PURPOSES, IS APPROXIMATELY 15 KM. THIS LED US TO BELIEVE THAT HAND PITCHING AND MACADAM WERE THE ONLY MATERIALS FOR THE BODY OF THE CARRIAGEWAY IN BULGARIA. HOWEVER, THE EXISTENCE OF SOILS, THE GREATER PART OF WHICH ARE OF GOOD QUALITY, AND THE IMPROVEMENT IN PUBLIC WORKS PLANT, MECHANICAL SHOVELS, TRUCKS, TRIPPERS, MOTOR GRADERS, LEVELLERS, VIBRATING ROLLERS, ETC., HAS LED TO THEIR USE FOR THE COMPLETION OF CERTAIN WORKS IN THE BODY OF THE CARRIAGEWAY, (FOR EXAMPLE SOFIA RING ROAD) WHERE HAND PITCHING WAS REPLACED BY AS-DUG GRAVEL. DURING THE PERIOD 1958-1959 STUDIES HAVE BEEN CARRIED OUT AND TEST LENGTHS HAVE BEEN LAID, REPLACING MACADAM BY MECHANICALLY STABILIZED AS-DUG GRAVEL IN AREAS WHERE STONE QUARRIES WERE RELATIVELY DISTANT, AT 50 TO 60 KM. THE GOOD CONDITION OF THE TEST LENGTHS, THE MANY ADVANTAGES DURING CONSTRUCTION AND FOR THE TRANSPORT OF GRAVEL AND, ABOVE ALL, THE ECONOMIC ADVANTAGE IN ITS USE, HAVE OPENED WIDE POSSIBILITIES FOR THE USE OF MECHANICALLY STABILIZED AS-DUG MATERIALS. SEVERAL PROBLEMS ARE DESCRIBED WHICH HAVE ARISEN IN THE COURSE OF THE USE OF AS-DUG SOIL: GRADING, INDEX OF PLASTICITY, MIXING, DENSITY, ETC., AS WELL AS THE SOLUTION OF CERTAIN OF THEM BY TAKING ACCOUNT OF BULGARIAN CONDITIONS. /AUTHOR/
