SHEAR STRENGTH, SETTLEMENT AND COMPACTION CHARACTERISTICS OF PULVERISED FUEL ASH

THE AMOUNT OF PULVERISED FUEL ASH /PFA/ PRODUCED BY BURNING COAL IN POWER STATION FURNACES AVERAGES ABOUT 18 PER CENT BY WEIGHT OF THE FUEL AND WITH THE STEADILY INCREASING CONSUMPTION OF COAL BY THE CENTRAL ELECTRICITY GENERATING BOARD, A COMMENSURATE INCREASE CAN BE EXPECTED IN THE ANNUAL OUTPUT OF PFA. THE PRESENT AND PREDICTED NATIONAL OUTPUT OF THE MATERIAL IS SHOWN AND FOR COMPARISON THE CURVE SHOWING THE GROWTH IN ECONOMIC APPLICATION OF PFA IN THE PAST FIVE YEARS. IT WILL BE OBSERVED THAT THE PERCENTAGE OF THE TOTAL PFA OUTPUT WHICH IS BEING PUT TO ECONOMIC USE HAS INCREASED RAPIDLY IN RECENT YEARS, BUT THE PREDICTED GROWTH IN ANNUAL OUTPUT OF THE MATERIAL IS SUCH THAT FOR THE FORESEEABLE FUTURE IT WILL CONTINUE TO BE POSSIBLE TO REGARD PFA AS A READILY AVAILABLE ENGINEERING MATERIAL OVER MUCH OF THE COUNTRY. /AUTHOR/
