UNUSUAL SOIL CONDITIONS CALLED FOR THE EXTRA DEEP CAISSONS IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF AN OVERPASS. THE NORTH SHORE AUTOROUTE ABOUT 50 MILES EAST OF MONTREAL PASSES OVER AN UNCONSOLIDATED LAYER OF CLAY WHERE ANTICIPATED SETTLEMENT COULD ADD 1,400 TONS THROUGH NEGATIVE FRICTION TO EACH CAISSON.
