Wide-Area Microscopic Traffic Simulator Featuring Virtual Driving Experience

The authors have developed a wide-area traffic simulator featuring virtual driving experience to evaluate and improve traffic management measures from both subjective and objective perspectives. The virtual driving experience requires two real-time processes: one is the real-time simulation of tens of thousands of vehicles, and the other is real-time video generation of the traffic situation from the driver’s viewpoint. The authors applied these functions to the intelligent transportation system (ITS) environment simulator that the authors had developed and that enables users to virtually drive one vehicle selected arbitrarily and virtually experience what it is like to drive on a wide area of roadway. As an example evaluation through a virtual driving experience, the authors evaluated a non-stop driving assistance service. Through the evaluation, the authors found that this simulator is effective in evaluating the service from both subjective and objective perspectives, and the authors also found that they can quickly improve the user interface of the service
