EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ON THE BEARING CAPACITY OF ISOLATED PILES IN LOESS /IN RUSSIAN/

THE PILES ARE OF THREE TYPES: MONOLITHIC REINFORCED CONCRETE, TUBULAR REINFORCED CONCRETE WITH AN EARTH CORE, METAL PILES WITH CLOSED LOWER END; LOESS SOIL, PRONE TO SUBSIDENCE TO A DEPTH OF 7 M., WAS TRAVERSED THROUGH THE WHOLE OF THIS DEPTH OR ONLY PARTIALLY OR NOT AT ALL. THE LIMIT-LOAD WAS 0.9 TIMES THE CRITICAL LOAD AND THE STRENGTH AS DETERMINED IN THE CALCULATIONS WAS 0.7 TIMES THE LIMIT-LOAD, IN CONFORMITY WITH SOVIET SPECIFICATIONS. PARTICULAR ATTENTION WAS PAID TO THE FORMATION AND THE FUNCTION OF THE EARTH CORE IN TUBULAR PILES; IN ORDER THAT THE PILE BE STRESSED LIKE A SOLID ELEMENT, IT HAD TO BE DRIVEN TO A SUFFICIENT DEPTH OR ITS HOLLOW SECTION HAD TO BE FAIRLY SHALLOW, BUT IN SPITE OF THEIR LOWER BEARING CAPACITY, TUBULAR PILES ARE MORE ECONOMICAL. THE INFLUENCE OF PILES ON THE COMPACTION OF ADJOINING SOIL WAS ALSO STUDIED BY MEANS OF DYNAMIC SOUNDING. THE MAIN CONCLUSIONS ARE AS FOLLOWS: (1) THE BEARING CAPACITY STILL EXISTS, EVEN IF THE WHOLE DEPTH OF LOESS SOIL IS SATURATED WITH WATER. (2) UNDER THE SAME CONDITIONS, THE LOAD IS SUPPORTED BOTH BY THE JOINT OF THE PILE AND THE LATERAL FRICTION, WHICH INCREASES WITH THE DEPTH OF PILE-DRIVING AND MUST BE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT IN THE CALCULATIONS. (3) THE MOST RATIONAL PILES WOULD BE TUBULAR PILES WITH A CLOSED LOWER END, WITHOUT REJECTING THE IDEA OF USING PILES WITH AN EARTH CORE. (4) IN LOESS SOIL, PRONE TO SETTLEMENT, THE BEARING CAPACITY TO TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT MUST NOT EXCEED THE BEARING CAPACITY OF ADJACENT SOIL SATURATED THROUGHOUT ITS DEPTH. (5) RESEARCH INTO THE BEARING CAPACITY REQUIRES STATIC OR DYNAMIC TESTS ON SATURATED SOIL. (6) THE POINT OF THE PILE SHOULD REACH A LAYER OF SOIL OF GOOD BEARING CAPACITY AND THE PILE SHOULD BE DRIVEN TO A MINIMUM DEPTH OF 5 M; THE BEARING CAPACITY CAN THEN BE DETERMINED BY MEANS OF DYNAMIC SOUNDING. (7) IF THE PILE DOES NOT PASS THROUGH THE WHOLE DEPTH OF SOIL PRONE TO SETTLEMENT, PRESSURE AT THE BASE OF THE CONE OF COMPACTED SOIL WILL NOT GENERALLY REACH THE CRITICAL VALUE AND SETTLEMENT WILL NOT OCCUR. AND (8) PILES CAN BE USED IN LOESS SOIL PRONE TO SETTLEMENT TO A DEPTH GREATER THAN 7 M, BUT THE LAYER WHICH CAN SETTLE UNDER ITS OWN WEIGHT, MUST BE TRAVERSED. /LCPC/RRL/
