THE FREQUENCY AND EFFECT OF DAMAGE TO LOCK GATES--AN NPC INVESTIGATION

This investigation by the U.K. Port Council Engineering Staff looked into the economic feasibility of spare lock gates and how water level in a dock affects the design of quay walls. Selected ports in the United Kingdom and Western Europe were included in the study. Most common cause of damage to lock gates were ship accidents. Most common cause of quay wall failure were accident draw down due to lock gate damage. A general conclusion, based on the probability of damage, shows that a spare lock gate cannot be economically justified. Specific conclusions in each case should be put to the methodology tests outlined in the report.
