A DEMONSTRATION PROJECT IN THE EXPLOSIVE EXCAVATION OF A RAILROAD CUT

PROJECT TRINIDAD, AN EXPLOSIVELY EXCAVATED RAILROAD CUT IN INTERBEDDED SANDSTONES AND SHALES, IS DESCRIBED IN DETAIL. THE 400 FOOT RAILROAD CUT DETONATION WAS ACCOMPLISHED IN DECEMBER 1970 WITH 44 TONS OF ALUMINIZED AMMONIUM NITRATE SLURRY. THE PROJECT INCLUDED INVESTIGATIONS OF EXPLOSIVE EMPLACEMENT TECHNIQUES, USE OF EXPLOSIVES, DESIGN OF CHARGE ARRAYS, SEISMIC MOTIONS, AND POSTSHOT ENGINEERING PROPERTIES. TECHNICAL PROGRAMS, CALIBRATION SHOTS, AND FIELD PROCEDURES ARE DISCUSSED IN SOME DETAIL. THE USE OF MILLISECOND DELAYS TO REDUCE SEISMIC HAZARDS IS PARTICULARLY SIGNIFICANT. /AUTHOR/
