DEVELOPMENTS IN TRIAXIAL TESTING TECHNIQUES

A SIMPLE DESIGN TRIAXIAL CELL WAS DEVELOPED, PRIMARILY TO SPEED UP THE TESTING PROCEDURE. THE MAIN FEATURE OF THE CELL DESIGN IS A ONE-PIECE SYNTHETIC RUBBER SLEEVE THAT RETAINS AN ANNULUS OF FLUID WHILE THE SPECIMEN IS INSERTED. NO TIME IS LOST DISMANTLING THE CELL BETWEEN TESTS. THE CELL BODY WEIGHS ONLY 5 KG. DIFFERENT SIZE CELLS ARE IN COMMERCIAL PRODUCTION. THE CELL IS DESIGNED TO APPLY CONFINING PRESSURES UP TO 10,000 LBF/SQUARE IN., EQUIVALENT TO A VERTICAL STRESS UNDER 3000 M OF OVERBURDEN. THE CELL DESIGN ALSO FACILITATES STRAIN MEASUREMENTS UNDER TRIAXIAL STRESS. A CELL OF SIMILAR DESIGN MAY ALSO BE USED FOR PERMEABILITY TESTINGS. /AUTHOR/
