A Communications Program to Support ITS
The importance of the communications systems supporting Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) is often underestimated. Transportation agencies spend millions of dollars annually on communication services to support ITS. A centralized communications program is vital for identifying investments and partnerships necessary for developing a robust and redundant network. This paper discusses the Virginia Department of Transportation’s (VDOT) approach for a communications program including a Communications Master Plan, the first project implemented from this plan to begin a statewide network, and the benefits of capitalizing on fiber optic resource sharing opportunities.
