STRADDLE CARRIER AND CONTAINER CRANE EVALUATION
A study of straddle carriers was conducted at five ports during 1970-71, and involved a total of thirty-four machines. Data on the performance and cost of carriers at each port were obtained for a minimum period of six months and, where possible, for a full year's operation. The total container throughput at each port was also obtained so that a cost per container handled could be calculated. A major problem encountered in the study was the difficulty in obtaining information in a sufficiently detailed form to be meaningful. This made it necessary for data to be laboriously extracted from records, often themselves inadequate. Much of the information was obtained on a confidential basis.
