Analysis of police collision files for pedestrian fatalities in London, 2006-10

Even though the fatality and accident rate have both gone down in recent years in London, it was thought that it would be worth it to examine the current incidence of traffic accident fatalities and accident rates in that city, to try to make further inroads in highway safety and continue to decrease the number of fatal traffic accidents. This study examined about 200 fatal traffic accidents in London, from 2006-2010. It specifically looked at those accidents where the victims were pedestrians. The study investigated primary interventions, which - if in place at the time - might have prevented the accidents; and secondary interventions which might have limited the severity of the accidents. Some factors emerged and were grouped into the following categories: alcohol impaired pedestrians, pedestrians 80 years or older, pedestrians walking in a pedestrian facility, pedestrians crossing a road who were not using a crossing facility, pedestrian-bus collisions, and pedestrians who were hit by speeding vehicles. Contributory factors, injuries, accident victims and perpetrators, and possible countermeasures were also examined. The most common countermeasures identified were considered to be primary countermeasures.
