SOIL TESTS FOR DESIGN OF RUNWAY PAVEMENTS

A REVIEW IS MADE OF THE SOIL TESTS EMPLOYED BY THE U. S. ENGINEER DEPARTMENT AND THE AVIATION ENGINEERS FOR THE DESIGN OF FLEXIBLE AND RIGID RUNWAY PAVEMENTS. FIELD BEARING TESTS AND THEIR APPLICATION TO BOTH FLEXIBLE AND RIGID PAVEMENT DESIGN AND THE USE OF THE CALIFORNIA BEARING RATIO TEST FOR FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT DESIGN WERE INVESTIGATED. THERE WILL SELDOM BE TIME TO CONDUCT ALL THE REQUIRED LABORATORY AND FIELD TESTS BEFORE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF RUNWAY PAVEMENTS. THEREFORE THIS EVALUATION HAS BEEN SEDT UP ON THE BASIS OF FIELD AND SIMPLE LABORATORY TESTS FOR QUICK CLASSIFICATION OF THE SOILS.
