SHEAR-STRENGTH DETERMINATION OF SOFT CLAYEY SOIL BY FIELD AND LABORATORY METHODS

FIELD VANE-SHEAR RESULTS AND SHEAR-STRENGTH CONSTANTS WERE COMPARED. THE TESTS WERE CONDUCTED ON SOFT BAY MUD THAT HAD BEEN OVERLAIN FOR SEVERAL YEARS WITH A LARGE DISPLACEMENT TYPE FILL. UNDISTURBED SAMPLES WERE OBTAINED WITH A SWEDISH FOIL SAMPLER AND 6 IN. DIAMETER PUSH TUBES. TRIAXIAL COMPRESSION TESTS AND UNCONFINED COMPRESSION TESTS WERE DETERMINED ON SPECIMENS FOR SHEAR STRENGTHS AND FOR THE MAGNITUDE OF OBTAINING THE RESIDUAL EFFECT OF DISPLACEMENT FILLS ON SOFT BAY MUD USED A FEW YEARS AFTER COMPLETING THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE FILL.
