A SIMPLE METHOD FOR ASSESSING THE MACHINEABILITY OF ROCKS

TESTS CONDUCTED WITH A WORKSHOP HACKSAW MACHINE ON ROCK DRILL CORES HAVE GIVEN RESULTS WHICH HAVE BEEN CORRELATED WITH THE CUTTING PROPERTIES OF A RANGE OF ROCKS LIKELY TO BE ENCOUNTERED IN MACHINE-DRIVEN TUNNELS. FROM THESE TESTS IT IS POSSIBLE TO OBTAIN AN INDICATION OF THE CUTTING PERFORMANCE OF ROCK CUTTING TOOLS. THIS IS A PRELIMINARY QUALITATIVE TEST WHICH MAY BE CARRIED OUT ON A SMALL SAMPLE OF ROCK WITH MACHINES THAT ARE COMMON TO MOST WORKSHOPS. /AUTHOR/
