CAPACITANCE TECHNIQUES FOR RADIAL DEFORMATIONS

A SENSITIVE DEVICE IS DESCRIBED FOR MEASURING RADIAL DEFORMATIONS IN THE TRIAXIAL TEST. THE DEVICE MEASURES THE CHANGE IN CAPACITANCE ASSOCIATED WITH A CHANGING GAP AROUND THE SPECIMEN AND DOES NOT REQUIRE CONTACT WITH THE SOIL SAMPLE. HIGH POTENTIAL ACCURACY OF CAPACITANCE DEVICES AND THE ABSENCE OF A NEED TO TOUCH THE SPECIMEN IN MEASUREMENT SUGGESTS THE USEFULNESS OF SUCH APPARATUS. APPRECIABLE CALIBRATION IS NEEDED, AS IS SHIELDING OF STRAY INTERFERENCES. IT APPEARS POSSIBLE TO ATTACH SERVO-MECHANISMS TO PERFORM ZERO-LATERAL-STRAIN-TRIAXIAL TESTS.
