AIR PERMEABILITY AS RELATED TO PARTICLE SIZE AND BULK DENSITY IN SAND SYSTEMS

THE VARIATION IN AIR PERMEABILITY DUE TO SIMULTANEOUS VARIATION OF BULK DENSITY AND PARTICLE SIZE WAS STUDIED. THE APPARATUS USED FOR AIR PERMEABILITY MEASUREMENTS IS DESCRIBED. NINE SIZE FRACTIONS OF SAND SEPARATED FROM ONE STOCK SAMPLE WERE USED. A MATHEMATICAL EXPRESSION IS PRESENTED FOR THE VARIATION IN AIR PERMEABILITY DUE TO SIMULTANEOUS VARIATION IN BULK DENSITY AND PARTICLE SIZE. AIR PERMEABILITY DECREASES WITH DECREASING PARTICLE DIAMETER AND WITH INCREASING BULK DENSITY ACCORDING TO THE GIVEN EQUATION.
