A PROPOSED SYSTEM OF SOIL AND ROCK MECHANICS FIELD MEASUREMENT DATA CLASSIFICATION

A SUGGESTION IS MADE THAT RELIABLE SETS OF FIELD MEASUREMENTS SHOULD BE STORED IN A READILY ACCESSIBLE FORM WITH FLEXIBILITY THAT ALLOWS THEM TO BE STUDIED FROM A RANGE OF POINTS OF VIEW. A SYSTEM OF FIELD MEASUREMENT DATA CLASSIFICATION IS PROPOSED TO PROVIDE SOIL ENGINEERS: (1) ACCESS TO A BREADTH OF AUSTRALIAN EXPERIENCE THAT IS CURRENTLY NOT AVAILABLE, AND (2) PRESENTATION OF BOTH PUBLISHED AND UNPUBLISHED DATA IN A FORM DESIGNED TO MINIMIZE THE NEED FOR REFERENCE TO THE ORIGINAL RECORD. A FLOW DIAGRAM IS PRESENTED OF THE PROSPOSED SYSTEM SHOWING ITS PRIMARY DIVISION INTO THE AREAS OF IDENTIFICATION, CLASSIFICATION, AND VALUE JUDGEMENT. THE USE OF MAGNETIC TAPES WITHIN AN ELECTRONIC COMPUTER IS RECOMMENDED AS THE BEST METHOD OF STORING AND RETRIEVING THE DATA AS PROCESSED ACCORDING TO THE SYSTEM. VARIABLES MEASURED AND INSTRUMENTS USED ARE DESCRIBED IN THE APPENDIX.
