THE USE OF THE STATIC (DUTCH) CONE PENETROMETER FOR THE IN SITU TESTING OF SOILS

A SUMMARY IS PRESENTED OF AVAILABLE CORRELATIONS BETWEEN SOUNDING RESULTS AND MATERIAL PROPERTIES, AND OF THE TECHNIQUES DEVELOPED FOR THE PREDICTION OF PILE CAPACITIES AND SETTLEMENTS FROM SOUNDING RESULTS. THE STATIC DUTCH CONE PENETROMETER IS USED FOR THE SANDY SOILS IN SITU TESTING. THE CORRELATIONS OF RESISTANCE AND SHEAR STRENGTH IN COHESIVE DEPOSITS INDICATE THAT THE CONE IS VERY USEFUL IN CHECKING THE STATISTICAL SIGNIFICANCE OF OTHER FORMS OF TESTS. THE RESULTS OF TWO PILE LOADING TESTS GIVE RESULTS COMPARABLE WITH OTHER INFORMATION. FOR FOOTING ON SAND, ACCEPTABLE SETTLEMENTS RATHER THAN ULTIMATE BEARING CAPACITY NORMALLY DICTATE THE SAFE BEARING PRESSURES EXCEPT FOR SMALL FOOTINGS. THE PREDICTION OF SETTLEMENTS FROM PENETRATION RESISTANCE READINGS DEPENDS ON THE EXISTENCE OF AN EMPIRICAL RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE SOUNDING RESISTANCE, WHICH IS A STRENGTH PHENOMENON, AND COMPRESSIBILITY. EQUATIONS ARE PRESENTED TO CALCULATE THESE PARAMETERS. THE MOST COMMON SUCCESSFUL APPLICATIONS OF THE DUTCH CONE APPARATUS ARE: (1) FOR FOUNDATIONS ON SAND TO DETERMINE SETTLEMENT CHARACTERISTICS, AND (2) FOR BUILDING FOUNDATIONS, STORAGE TANKS, HIGHWAY FILLS, ETC. ON SOFT ALLUVIAL OR ESTUARINE DEPOSITS TO SUPPLEMENT OTHER FIELD AND LABORATORY WORK AND TO ASSESS THE STATISTICAL SIGNIFICANCE OF LABORATORY TEST RESULTS.
