On the Move: State Strategies for 21st Century Transportation Solutions
State law makers are investigating and enacting a number of intriguing and innovative fiscally sound transportation policies to make sure that the mobility needs of the future are taken care of in a way that supports energy independence, environmental sustainability, economic growth, transportation safety, and affordable transportation. Transportation financing and policy are at a tricky place in the United States today. The primary means of financing transportation operations, construction and planning - the gas tax - is declining due to the increased use of alternative fuels, inflation, and increasing costs of construction. This report discusses the challenges of transportation today, and the ways in which state legislatures are meeting the challenges.
