THE CAPACITY OF CARRIER FREQUENCY (CF) PHOTOGRAPHIC SYSTEMS FOR ALPHANUMERIC INFORMATION STORAGE

EXPERIMENTS WERE CONDUCTED TO PRODUCE SINGLE CARRIER GRATINGS ON PHOTOGRAPHIC MATERIAL AND TO SUPERIMPOSE DIFFERENT NUMBERS OF THOSE GRATINGS. AT LEAST SINGLE GRATINGS REPRESENTED ONLY BY THE OUTER GELATINE RELIEF (BLEACHING & FIXING PROCESS) YIELDED DIFFRACTION EFFICIENCIES WELL IN AGREEMENT WITH VALUES CALCULATED ACCORDING TO THE THEORY OF KOGELNIK. THE MORE COMPLEX RESULTS OF SUPERPOSITION EXPERIMENTS COULD BE INTERPRETED QUALITATIVELY WITH INTERMODULATION, NONLINEAR BEHAVIOR OF THE EMULSION AND THE SUPPRESSION OF THE HIGHER INTERMODULATION TERMS BY VANISHING MFT-VALUES FOR HIGHER FREQUENCIES AS WELL AS THE DIMINSHING INTERMODULATION AMPLITUDES LYING IN THE TOE OF THE H&D-CURVE. IT HAS BEEN SHOWN THAT THESE EFFECTS OF VARYING DIFFRACTION EFFICIENCY CREATE A "SPOTTED" LOOK OF CHARACTERS OF SUPERIMPOSED PRINTED PAGES AND THAT THIS UNWANTED EFFECT CAN BE AVOIDED BY BIASING A CF-PHOTOGRAPH WITH SEVERAL UNMODULATED CARRIER GRATINGS AND/OR SUPERIMPOSING A LARGE NUMBER OF SIGNAL COMPLEXES. RESULTS ARE GIVEN OF EXPERIMENTS WITH 15, 30, 45, AND 60-FOLD SUPERPOSITIONS OF PRINTED MATTER YIELDING A REMARKABLY GOOD QUALITY OF RECONSTRUCTION AND EVEN AN INCREASE OF SIGNAL-TO-NOISE RATIO UP TO 45 SUPER-POSITIONS. /AUTHOR/
