ELECTROPHORETIC SEPARATION AND FRACTIONATION OF CLAY MIXTURES

AN ELECTROPHORETIC CONTINUOUS PARTICLE SEPARATOR MAKES IT POSSIBLE TO SEPARATE MIXTURES OF BENTONITE-ILLITE AND BENTONITE-KAOLINITE CLAYS. SEPARATING BENTONITE AND KAOLINITE FROM AN ARTIFICIAL MIXTURE REQUIRES AND ELECTROLYTE OF 0.001 M SODIUM CARBONATE ADJUSTED TO A PH OF 4.5 WITH HYDROCHLORIC ACID. THE CONCENTRATION OF CLAY IN SUSPENSION WAS 0.2 MG/ML. THE SUSPENSION CONTAINED A SMALL AMOUNT OF THALLIUM CHLORIDE. SEPARATING BENTONITE AND ILLITE FROM AN ARTIFICIAL MIXTURE REQUIRED THE SAME CONDITIONS EXCEPT THAT THE CLAY SUSPENSION CONTAINED A LARGER QUANTITY OF THALLIUM CHLORIDE. /AUTHOR/
