THE ENGINEERING SOIL SURVEY AND ITS RELATION TO ENGINEERING PROBLEMS

THIS ARTICLE DESCRIBES THE ENGINEERING SOIL SURVEY AND THE RESEARCH TECHNIQUES AND METHODS WHICH WERE APPLIED IN THE PREPARATION OF THE ENGINEERING OIL MAPS. EACH OF THE 21 NEW JERSEY COUNTY REPORTS PRESENTS DETAILED INFORMATION CONCERNING THE VARIOUS SOIL AREAS WHICH ARE DELINEATED ON THE ENGINEERING SOIL MAP. THE SYMBOLS SHOWN ON THESE MAPS ARE EXPLAINED, ENGINEERING TEST VALUES GIVEN FOR THE MAJOR SOIL TYPES, AND COMMENTS ARE PRESENTED RELATIVE TO EACH TYPE OF MATERIAL. THIS ARTICLE ALSO ILLUSTRATES SOME OF THE APPLICATIONS TO VARIOUS ENGINEERING PROBLEMS. THE SOIL SURVEY WORK WAS GREATLY FACILITATED BY THE USE AND INTERPRETATION OF AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHS. THE PHOTOGRAPHS WERE OF PARTICULAR VALUE IN MAPPING SOIL TYPES IN MOUNTAINOUS AREAS, AS WELL AS IN THE COASTAL PLAIN PROVINCE. /AUTHOR/
