AUTOMATIC DATA-RECORDING FOR THE LABORATORY CONSOLIDATION TEST

THE LABORATORY SOIL CONSOLIDATION TEST IS TIME-CONSUMING BOTH IN MAKING THE MEASUREMENTS AND IN PROCESSING THE RESULTS. TO PROVIDE MORE CONSISTENT TEST RESULTS AND TO MINIMIZE THE EFFORT INVOLVED, THE LABORATORY HAS DEVELOPED A DATA-LOGGING SYSTEM TO RECORD THE MEASUREMENTS OBTAINED FROM THE OEDOMETER. THE COMPRESSIONS OCCURRING ARE MEASURED BY DISPLACEMENT TRANSDUCERS AND RECORDED ON PUNCHED PAPER TAPE FOR SUBSEQUENT ANALYSIS BY COMPUTER. FOR 24-HOUR TESTS UNDER CONTROLLED LABORATORY CONDITIONS THE OVERALL ACCURACY OF THE SYSTEM WILL GENERALLY BE OF THE ORDER OF PLUS OR MINUS 0.015 MM (PLUS OR MINUS 0.0006 IN) OR BETTER. THIS SYSTEM HAS BEEN OPERATED VERY SUCCESSFULLY FOR MORE THAN ONE YEAR AND IS NOW USED EXCLUSIVELY FOR ALL CONVENTIONAL CONSOLIDATIN TESTS CARRIED OUT AT THE LABORATORY. THE QUANTITY OF DATA COLLECTED IS CONSIDERABLY GREATER THAN THAT OBRAINED BY MANUAL RECORDING AND THE COMPRESSION MEASUREMENTS MADE IN THIS WAY ENABLE THE TEST RESULTS TO BE EVALUATED IN A MORE SATISFACTORY MANNER WITH LESS STAFF EFFORT. THE SYSTEM COULD BE USED FOR ANY LABORATORY TESTS WHERE SIMILAR DEFLECTION MEASUREMENTS ARE REQUIRED. /AUTHOR/
