SHEAR WAVE VELOCITY DETERMINATION IN SHALLOW SEISMIC STUDIES

IT IS SHOWN THAT SHEAR WAVE VELOCITY DATA CAN BE OBTAINED BY A COMBINATION OF (1) PROPER INSTRUMENTATION - A 28-LB PORTABLE FACSIMILE SEISMOGRAPH WHICH PRESENTS THE DATA IN THE FORM OF 2-MSEC DASHES, THE LEADING EDGES OF WHICH START AT THE POSITIVE ZERO CROSSINGS OF THOSE SEISMIC SIGNALS WHICH HAVE AN AMPLITUDE ABOVE A CERTAIN THRESHOLD, (2) IDENTIFICATION OF THE SV WAVE ON THE COMPRESSIONAL RECORD, CRITERIA FOR WHICH ARE GIVEN, AND (3) GENERATION AND SEPARATE RECORDING OF HORIZONTALLY POLARIZED SHEAR WAVES, AS A COMPLEMENTARY AND ALTERNATIVE SCHEME OF IDENTIFYING S ON THE ORDINARY REFRACTION RECORD - THE GROUND IS IMPACTED IN ANY OF A NUMBER OF WAYS, AND THE SHEAR WAVE RECORD IS OBTAINED WITH AN ORDINARY HORIZONTAL HALL-SEARS GEOPHONE WITH ITS SENSITIVE AXIS PLACED TRANSVERSE TO THE SEISMIC LINE. /GA/
