THE INFLUENCE OF TEMPERATURE OF HUMIDIFICATION ON THE GEOTECHNICAL PROPERTIES OF LATERITIC SOILS

THE GEOTECHNICAL PROPERTIES OF SOME LATERITIC SOILS USED IN ROAD AND RUNWAY CONSTRUCTION TEND TO IMPROVE WITH TIME. IN ORDER TO DISCOVER THE CAUSE OF THIS PHENOMENON, IDENTIFICATION AND C.B.R. TESTS WERE CARRIED OUT ON SAMPLES OF TWO LATERITIC SOILS BEFORE AND AFTER CYCLES. IT WAS SHOWN THAT IMMERSION FOLLOWED BY OVEN-DRYING RESULTED IN AN IMPROVEMENT BEING MORE MARKED AS THE TEMPERATURE INCREASES. OVEN-DRYING INFLUENCES THE LIQUID LIMIT, PLASTICITY AND SHRINKAGE INDICES GREATLY, AND INCREASES C.B.R. VALUES. OVEN-DRYING AT 50 DEGREES C CAN PRODUCE AN INCREASE IN C.B.R. EVEN WITHOUT PREVIOUS IMMERSION OF THE SPECIMEN. /RRL/
