ON A SOIL AND GROUND WATER INVESTIGATION WITH THE SHALLOW REFRACTION METHOD AT MO I RANA

THE SHALLOW SEISMIC REFRACTION METHOD, FOR MORE THAN 20 YEARS WELL KNOWN AS A USEFUL TOOL FOR PLANNING OF DAM SITES, TUNNELS, ROADS AND OTHER CONSTRUCTION WORKS HAS, DURING THE LAST TEN YEARS ALSO PROVED TO BE AN EXCELLENT METHOD TO LOCATE WATERBEARING FISSURED ZONES IN BEDRUCK, HIDDEN BY OVERBURDEN. FURTHERMORE, THE METHOD CAN BE SUCCESSFULLY APPLIED TO ESTABLISH OCCURRENCE OF DIFFERENT LAYERS WITHIN THE OVERBURDEN. THE AUTHORS HAVE CHOSEN THE SEISMIC INVESTIGATIONS AT MO I RANA, NORWAY, TO ILLUSTRATE HOW A RELIABLE PICTURE OF THE SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS IN AN AREA WITH SAND AND CLAY DEPOSITS CAN BE OBTAINED WITH HELP OF THE FAST SEISMIC METHOD. ALSO SHOWN IS THE POSSIBILITY TO DETERMINE THE GROUND WATER LEVEL AND THE DIRECTIONS OF THE WATER FLOW. /RRL/A/
