PREDICTING THE DURABILITY OF ROCK

THE FACTORS AFFECTING THE DURABILITY OF ROCK IN ENGINEERING STRUCTURES ARE DISCUSSED. THE DATA PRESENTED POINT TO THE NEED FOR THINKING OF ROCK DECAY IN TERMS OF THE ACTUAL THICKNESS OF THE LAYER DECAYING WITH EACH CYCLE OF WEATHERING. A SERIES OF EXPERIMENTS TO ISOLATE THE FACTORS WAS DESIGNED AND CONDUCTED IN THE BLUE METAL INDUSTRIES LABORATORY AND IN THE EXPERIMENTS A DISTINCTION IS DRAWN BETWEEN MACRO-AND MICRO-STRUCTURES IN ROCK. THE RELATION OF DURABILITY TESTING TO TYPICAL SPECIFICATIONS FOR ROCK IS DISCUSSED. /RRL/A/
