THE CONSISTENCY PENETROMETER-EVALUATION OF THE CONSISTENCY OF FINE SOIL /IN FRENCH/

FINE CLAYEY SOIL FROM VARIOUS REGIONS IN FRANCE WAS SUBJECTED TO CONSISTENCY PENETROMETER (FALL CONE) TESTS. A STATISTICAL STUDY IS PRESENTED OF THE RESULTS OF THOSE TESTS AND OF THOSE OF LABORATORY AND IN-SITU VANE TESTS AND TRIAXIAL TEST. FINDINGS SHOW THAT THE CONE PENETRATION TEST CAN BE USED FOR ACCURATE MEASUREMENT OF THE UNCONSOLIDATED UNDRAINED COHESION OF SOFT CLAYEY SOIL, AND TO OBTAIN ATTERBERG LIMITS. DETAILS ARE ALSO GIVEN OF A COMPARATIVE STUDY BETWEEN KARLSSON'S METHOD (LIQUID LIMIT) AND THE CASAGRANDE LIQUID LIMIT TEST. THE PLASTIC LIMIT CAN ALSO BE OBTAINED BY THIS METHOD. /LCPC/RRL/
