STUDIES OF THE KEUPER MARL PHYSICAL PROPERTIES

MEASUREMENTS OF THE SURFACE AREA, REFLECTION SPECTRA AND SUCTION PROPERTIES OF KUEPER MARL ARE DESCRIBED. THE CORRELATION OF THESE PHYSICAL PROPERTIES WITH THE MINERALOGICAL ANALYSIS, CHEMICAL ANALYSIS AND CLASSIFICATION TESTS OF THE SOILS IS DISCUSSED. THE RESULTS OF THE INVESTIGATION SHOWED THAT: (1) THE MEASUREMENTS OF SPECIFIC SURFACE AREA SUPPORTED THE X RAY ESTIMATES OF THE AMOUNT OF SWELLING CHLORITE PRESENT IN THE SOILS. (2) THE SPECIFIC SURFACE AREA FOR NITROGEN ABSORPTION OF THE SOILS COULD BE CALCULATED FROM THE X RAY ANALYSES, ASSUMING VALUES FOR THE SPECIFIC SURFACE AREA OF THE CONSTITUENT PURE CLAY MINERALS. (3) THE COLOR OF THE SOILS WAS CONSISTENT WITH MOST OF THE SOIL PARTICLES BEING COATED WITH A THIN FILM OF IRON OXIDE. (4) THE RELATIONS BETWEEN SUCTION AND MOISTURE CONTENT FOR THE CONTINUOUSLY DISTURBED SOIL CONSTITUTED A REGULAR FAMILY OF CURVES. (5) THE LIQUID LIMITS OF THE SOILS WERE APPROXIMATELY EQUAL TO THEIR MOISTURE CONTENTS IN THE CONTINOUSLY CONDITION AT A SUCTION OF PFO AND (6) THE PLASTIC LIMITS OF THE SOILS WERE APPROXIMATELY EQUAL TO THEIR MOISTURE CONTENTS IN THE CONTINOUSLY DISTURBED CONDITION AT A SUCTION OF PF3. /RRL/A/
