EVALUATION OF THE CALIFORNIA SAND-EQUIVALENT TEST

IN THIS PAPER, DATA FROM SEVERAL THOUSAND TESTS OF BASE MATERIAL AND MINERAL AGGREGATES ARE PRESENTED IN GRAPHICAL FORM AND THE AUTHOR DISCUSSES THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE CALIFORNIA SAND EQUIVALENT TEST RESULTS, THE PLASTICITY INDEX TEST RESULTS AND THE AMOUNT OF MATERIAL PASSING THE NO. 200 SIEVE. THE TEST DATA ARE ARRANGED IN ORDER OF INCREASING SAND EQUIVALENT VALUES AND DIVIDED INTO ELEVEN GRAPHS. AS THE VALUE INCREASES ON THE SAND EQUIVALENT SEALS THE QUALITY OF BASE MATERIAL BECOMES MORE ACCEPTABLE. THE AUTHOR DISCUSSES SOMEWHAT THE EFFECT OF PARTICLE ROUGHNESS ON SAND EQUIVALENT TEST AS WELL AS GRAIN SIZE OF THE MATERIAL PASSING THE NO. 200 SIEVE. FROM THE DATA PORTRAYED THE AUTHOR CONCLUDES THAT BASE MATERIALS HAVING SAND EQUIVALENTS OF 0 TO 14 ARE AS A RULE UNSATISFACTORY, FROM 15 TO 24 DOUBTFUL, BUT USUALLY UNSATISFACTORY, 25 TO 34 DOUBTFUL, BUT USUALLY SATISFACTORY, 35 TO 54 ALMOST ALWAYS SATISFACTORY, AND 55 TO 100 SATISFACTORY. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT THE SAND EQUIVALENT TEST RESULTS REFLECT THE QUALITY OF THE MATERIAL AND THAT THE TEST IS OF DEFINITE VALUE AS A RAPID FIELD TEST TO DETERMINE THE ACCEPTABILITY OF MATERIALS. /AUTHOR/
