AN APPARATUS FOR LEACHING SOIL SAMPLES

A LEACHING METHOD IS PRESENTED WHICH IS BASED ON A REVERSE FLOW OF THE EXTRACTING SOLUTION THROUGH THE SOIL SAMPLE AS COMPARED WITH CONVENTIONAL DOWNWARD LEACHING. A PARTIAL SUSPENSION OF THE SAMPLE RESULTS IN & ALLOWS FREE ACCESS OF THE SOLUTION TO ALL SOIL PARTICLES. DIFFICULTIES ENCOUNTERED WITH FINE PARTICLES PACKING ONTO THE FILTER IN AN IMPERMEABLE LAYER ARE AVOIDED. LEACHING TUBES ARE CONSTRUCTED FROM PERSPEX. THE FILTERS ARE CUT WITH A CORK BORER. A 2MM. CATHETER TUBING LEADING FROM THE MANIFOLD TO THE LEACHING TUBES AND FROM THE TUBES TO A SUITABLE RECEPTACLE ENSURES A CONTINUOUS COLUMN OF THE LEACHING SOLUTION. THIS ADDS CONSIDERABLE VERSATILITY TO THE RATES OF FLOW THAT CAN BE ACHIEVED. FURTHER CONTROL OF THE FLOW RATE IS MADE BY THE STOPCOCKS LEADING FROM THE MANIFOLD AND BY THE CHOICE OF THE GRADE OF FILTER PAPER USED. THIS LEACHING TUBE HAS BEEN USED FOR SOIL SAMPLES OF 1 TO 2 G. WEIGHT, BUT VARIATIONS FOR LARGER SAMPLES COULD BE SIMILARLY CONSTRUCTED.
