A SIMPLE CONTINUOUS SOLID PARTICLE SHAPE CLASSIFIER

A SIMPLE DEVICE WAS DEVELOPED TO SEPARATE SPHERICAL FROM NONSPHERICAL PARTICLES. THE SEPARATION PROCESS DEPENDS ON GROSS TO SUBTLE DIFFERENCES IN THE COEFFICIENT OF FRICTION OF SPHERICAL PARTICLES AND OF ANGULAR TO SEMISPHERICAL PARTICLES ON A FLAT SURFACE OF LOW SLOPE. THIS DEVICE WOULD HAVE USE IN THE PREPARATION OF FEED FOR VIBRATORY COMPACTED NUCLEAR FUEL ELEMENTS, OR SEPARATING BROKEN SHAPES IN THE PHARMACEUTICAL FIELD. A TIGHT-SHAPED CHROMIUM PLATED MAGNESIUM PLATE IS USED TO PROVIDE EVEN FLOW OF THE SPHERES AND NONSPHERES. IT MAY BE ELECTRICALLY GROUNDED, WHICH HELPS REDUCE THE TENDENCY FOR STATIC CHARGES TO DISRUPT EVEN FLOW OF MATERIAL. OPERATING PROCEDURE IS TO START A SEPARATION WITH A LOW FEED RATE AND A LOW TO MODERATE PLATE VIBRATION AMPLITUDE. PLATE ANGLE IS ADJUSTED TO GIVE THE CLEANEST SEPARATION OF SPHERES FROM NONSPHERES. ELLIPSOIDS, HEMISPHERES AND PARTIALLY TRUNCATED SPHERES ARE SEPARATED FROM ESSENTIALLY PERFECT SPHERES BY LOWERING THE ANGLE OF TILT OF THE PLATE AND REDUCING THE AMPLITUDE OF VIBRATION.
