THIS PAPER DESCRIBES CURRENT PROCEDURES USED IN PERFORMING SOILS INVESTIGATIONS AND DEVELOPING DESIGN RECOMMENDATIONS FOR HIGHWAYS ON LOESSIAL TERRAIN. IT EXPLAINS INVESTIGATION PROCEDURES FROM THE RECONNAISSANCE PHASE THROUGH THE MOST DETAILED STUDY AND DISCUSSES THE OCCURRENCE AND CHARACTER OF ALASKAN LOESS RELATIVE TO SURFACE TRANSPORTATION ROUTES.
