A RAPID METHOD OF SOIL MOISTURE DETERMINATION

A SIMPLE METHOD DEVELOPED BY THE AUTHORS FOR SOIL MOISTURE DETERMINATION IS PRESENTED. A TWO-PIECE, 100-ML. GLASS FLASK WAS DEVELOPED FOR DETERMINATION OF SOIL MOISTURE. THE PRINCIPAL INVOLVED IS THE VARIABLE INCREASE IN THE KNOWN VOLUME OF LIQUID WITH THE ADDITION OF A SOIL SAMPLE OF VARYING MOISTURE CONTENTS. THE INCREASE IN VOLUME IS MEASURED IN THE CALIBRATED TUBULAR STOPPER OF THE FLASK, AS SUCH AND ALSO AS MOISTURE PERCENTAGE, ON TWO DIFFERENT SCALES PROVIDED. RESULTS OF THIS SIMULTANEOUS DETERMINATION OF THE MOISTURE CONTENTS OF TEN DIFFERENT SOILS FROM FINE SAND TO CLAY LOAM WITH PH FROM 5.3 TO 8.5 AND ORGANIC CARBON FROM 0.2 TO 0.8% BY OVEN-DRYING AND THE PROPOSED FLASK METHOD ARE GIVEN. THE WIDE-MOUTH DESIGN OF THE FLASK PERMITS EASY TRANSFERENCE OF SOIL SAMPLE TO FLASK.
