An electronic docking system utilizing the Doppler shift phenomenon in a radar signal has been developed for use in the berthing of very large tankers. Other than a VHF radio link, there are no further requirements for any onboard electronics gear, as all of the hardware is located on the jetty, and all information is radioed to the vessel. Using this system, movement of as little as four feet per minute can be measured, and distance off the jetty down to two feet. An explanation of the operation of the system is included in the presentation.
