THE BOREHOLE DEFORMATION TYPE OF ROCK STRESS MEASURING INSTRUMENT

A DESCRIPTION IS GIVEN OF THE OPERATING PRINCIPLES AND LIMITATIONS OF AN INSTRUMENT USED TO DETERMINE ROCK STRESS BY MEASUREMENT OF RADIAL DISPLACEMENTS IN THE DIRECTION OF ONE OR MORE DIAMETERS OF A BOREHOLE IN WHICH IT IS INSTALLED. STRESSES ARE CALCULATED FROM CHANGES IN BOREHOLE DIAMETER USING FORMULAS DERIVED BY ELASTIC THEORY. THE INSTRUMENT IS A SOFT TYPE, NOT THE SO-CALLED BOREHOLE INCLUSION TYPE OF DISPLACEMENT MEASURING DEVICE. NUMEROUS SPECIFIC INSTRUMENTS OF THIS TYPE HAVE BEEN DESIGNED. DETERMINATIONS OF STRESSES IN ROCKS USING ONE AND TWO BOREHOLES ARE EXAMINED AND OUTLINED IN A TABLE. /GA/
