SEISMIC SURVEYS IN THE NEW ENGLAND STATES

SEISMIC REFRACTION SURVEYS HAVE BEEN OPERATED FOR ENGINEERING PROJECTS IN NEW ENGLAND SINCE 1939. EVERY CASE OF UNSATISFACTORY RESULTS WAS DUE TO HUMAN DEFICIENCIES AND NOT TO THE SEISMIC METHOD. ERRORS ARE MINIMIZED IF AN EXPERIENCED ENGINEERING REFRACTION SEISMOLOGIST BASES HIS INTERPRETATIONS ON GOOD SEISMIC DATA, OBTAINED WITH RELIABLE EQUIPMENT. THE SEISMOLOGIST MUST BE COMPLETELY CANDID WITH THE ENGINEER AND ADVISE HIM OF THE LIMITATIONS OF THE METHOD INSOFAR AS THE RESULTS AFFECT THE ENGINEERING PROJECT. PROPERLY REPORTED RESULTS, CORRELATED WITH BORINGS, SHOULD BE USED ONLY FOR THE PURPOSE FOR WHICH THE SEISMIC SURVEY WAS INTENDED. SEISMIC SURVEY DATA, CORRELATED WITH BORINGS PROVIDE AN AVERAGE PROFILE OF THE BEDROCK SURFACE, AND GENERALIZED INFORMATION CONCERNING OVERBURDEN AND BEDROCK CONDITIONS. /CGRA/
