Planning and designing of the road as related to the environment
The aim of this paper is to stress the need to conserve, and if possible enhance, the environment in the planning and designing of roads. It refers principally to the problems of two lane rural roads and makes reference to those problems peculiar to scenic or recreational roads. The type and nature of views presented to road users are described briefly and related to route location principles and to elements of design. In recognition of growing public criticisms of new highway proposals a procedure is described for the extension of route investigation studies to include social values (a).
